Class and Curriculum Information

Welcome to our class curriculum page. Here you will find useful information about the things your child is learning at school. 

Important information: 

  •  Please use entrance and exit Gate 1. Start time is 8:40. Finish time is 2:45
  • Please can your child bring in their water bottle every day. 
  • PE is on a Monday. Your child can come to school in the new relaxed dress code every day.
  • Homework will be set on Class Dojo every Monday. This will include spellings, reading and times tables. 
  • You may message me with questions on Class Dojo. I will respond to these on a Monday and Thursday. 



We use the Power Maths scheme in all of our maths lessons. We adapt the scheme to meet the needs of our children and ensure that they are all progressing throughout the year. Lessons follow the same format of:

  • Discover
  • Share
  • Think Together
  • Practise
  • Reflect

At the moment, we are learning about place value with 4 digit numbers but this term we will move on to addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and perimeter.

We also spend time every day becoming fluent in our additive and multiplication facts. We do this in lots of fun ways and follow the same format each week:

  • Mental Maths Monday
  • True or False Tuesday
  • Wonder Wednesday
  • Think It Through Thursday
  • Figure It Out Friday

Times Tables are very important in year 4 as a curriculum objective is to know all tables to 12x12. There is a check on this at the end of the year.



Our English lessons are driven by an exciting book. 

For Autumn 1: 

We are looking at The Lost Happy Endings. We will be learning how to write an exciting narrative. We will focus on use of fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases. In Big Read we will be focussing on learning new vocabulary, fluency and retrieval and inference questions. 

For Autumn 2: 

We are looking at the non-fiction text Meet The Romans. We will be using this to get a good overview of Ancient Roman society. We will be learning how to write an a non-chronological report using this and a story in the style of an ancient myth. We will focus on subordinating conjunctions, fronted adverbials and organising writing into paragraphs. In Big Read we will be looking at Ancient Greek Myths, we will focus on vocabulary, expression in our reading aloud and inference.



Every week we will publish spellings on Class Dojo every Monday. They will alternate between Year 3 and 4 Common Exception Words and spelling rules. Please support your child by practising these at home. The spellings will be tested on the following Monday.



This term we will be covering sound to fit into our work on strings. 

Sound: We will be identifying how sounds are made through something vibrating, understanding that these vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear. We will investigate patterns in the volume and the pitch of a sound and the features of that object. We will also investigate how we can soundproof something and use our knowledge of sound to do that.


We also teach your child Spanish, Computing, PE, Art, DT, Music, Geography, History and RE as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Where possible lessons are inspired by the text that we are reading in class. This term, we will look particularly at the Ancient Romans.

As they are year 4, your child will have started strings lessons and is learning to play the violin, viola or cello every other Friday.
