Old and New Toys
Throughout the Spring term, the children have been focusing on history and in particular the subject of old toys. We have learnt about the type of toys children played with from different historical periods of time and discussed and investigated the materials they were made from.
Most of the toys we investigated in school once belonged to Mrs Bowen's grown-up children.
Most of the toys were made from plastic and some were controlled with batteries.
However, some children had great fun discovering how to wind up cars and let them go!
Following on from all of our learning and investigating old toys in school, we had the joy of being able to visit Sudbury Hall, a children's toy museum. Here the children saw toys from many years ago, estimated their age and put them into historical timelines.
We listened to the guides in the hall, who told us all about how most poor children of the past did not have toys but instead had to work, most probably down mines or sweeping chimneys! Many of the toys we saw were made from materials like cloth, wood, metal and later on, plastic. Some were even exhibited in glass cabinets because they were too old for us to handle.
