Maths learning in Reception

At Dunkirk, we use the scheme PowerMaths to teach your child. It is a wonderful scheme that develops a true mastery approach. Children securely learn everything about a number or concept using a small steps approach. Whilst it can seem like children spend a lot of time focussing on earlier numbers, developing a deep understanding of a number enables them to be successful mathematicians later on. For example, learning how to flexibly partition numbers into many different ways and how to manipulate number sentences accordingly, prepares pupils for their secondary education when learning complex algebra. 

It is crucial that children learn these skills and a 'Can Do' approach to maths. We believe that all children are natural mathematicians and we want this belief to stay with them for the rest of their lives.
