Using our design skills to create toys

Linking with our historical topic and learning about toys, the children went on to design and create toys out of different materials.

Our targets for Design and Technology in Year 1 involve a lot of joining and fixing, and even for our textile project, the children are not required to sew materials together, but instead have experience of using a hot glue gun! Under close adult supervision, the children followed instructions and used this to help secure their features onto socks, creating a fun sock puppet.

Some children chose to use sticky tape, as well as the glue gun to secure their features like googly eyes and feathers.

The children used their original paper designs to inspire and guide the next stage of their creative process. They watched and followed simple creative workshops by myself and the other Year 1 staff, providing 'worked examples' of accessories made from resources, such as pipe cleaners and felt material.

Creating glasses out of pipe cleaners, although they are supposed to be for your sock puppet!

Finally, we had fun playing with our puppets and exhibiting them in our final end-of-term art exhibition.

The other project the children did was to create a mobile, made from card in the style of the artist Henri Matisse and his cut-out shapes. This involved learning how to make a secure cross brace to hang the cut-out shapes from.

We used old pencils to do this because this also reinforced our class discussions we have had about reusing and recycling things.

This project involved a lot of concentration, dexterity and patience and when it was sometimes difficult for individual children to manage on their own, their friends came to help them, demonstrating support and coaching skills.
