How to become a Viking

The Vicious Vikings come to Dunkirk!
The Year 3 pupils spent the spring term learning about vicious Vikings... or as we actually found out... very skilful farmers and boat builders.
ALL ABOUT THE WORLD: The era started with a vicious raid against the peaceful holy island of Lindisfarne and the children found out how these raids turned into a full-scale invasion of Britain. We did re-enactments of life aboard a long boat and also the final battle of Stamford Bridge.
CREATE: The focus of our art was sketching the face. We talked about facial features and where exactly they fit on the face. We then did portrait sketches of Thor and Loki, Viking Gods. Another art objective, was mixing colours. We used this idea to create multi-coloured Viking shield, only using the primary colours: blue, red and yellow. But our creativity didn't stop there. After practising on binca first, we designed and put together Viking merchant bags using running stitch.
Take action: We put all this work into a whole school exhibition. It was a great success!
As it is the National Year of Reading, we studied Arthur and the Golden Rope. We used this as inspiration for different activities and even invented our own Viking gods. Here are a few of the scary beings:

We have also had a great term of science investigations. The children were studying different types of light sources: natural and man-made. We also looked at different objects to decide if they were opaque, translucent or transparent. One groovy investigation involved making some very fashionable sunglasses!
