Lenton in the style of Piet Mondrian

Exploring the Year 1 curriculum through a cross - curricular approach allows the children to see how certain subjects overlap with others, such as Art and Geography.

The children learnt all about the famous artist Piet Mondrian and his particular work on primary colours. Together we looked at examples of his artwork, paying close attention to the studies he made of streets and maps.

We then used real maps of Lenton, traced around roads and areas with black lines and finally filled in the spaces with primary colours, creating a Mondrian-type piece of artwork.

The final part of our geography/art project was to turn our drawings into a Mondrian style collage. Working in pairs to encourage thought and discussion about their designs, the children then used scissors to cut 2D shapes of primary colours and arrange them in a creative way.
