Making toy mobiles

The children in Olive Class have become designers! We learnt about the artist Henri Matisse and designed hanging mobiles in the style of his Cut Out work.

It was a demanding process that required a lot of thought and fine motor control. The children needed to draw shapes and patterns, reflecting Matisse's style, and then use scissors in a controlled way, turning the paper and card to form curves, twists and spirals. Finally, we worked together to create a cross brace out of old broken pencils and secured it with strings and then everyone's mobiles were exhibited for parents and carers to see in our end-of-term art and design exhibition.
